Their Eyes Were Watching God is an inspiring story of a beautiful young lady named Janie Mae Crawford. Janie is telling her life story to her bestfriend, Pheoby Watson. Her story begins with her return to her hometown of Eatonville, Florida, where she is greeted by judgemental towns people. Once she gets settled back in she makes a life-changing realization of her desire to fall in love. She realizes this in her backyard one day while watching a bee polinate on her pear tree. Soon after she gets married, with the help of her grandmother, to Logan Killicks, a farmer who is much older than her. Janie is very unhappy in the marrige and eventually leaves Logan for a man named Joe Starks. Joe quickly lets Janie know that he is in control of their marriage by beating her. Janie feels trapped in her own life and doesn't try to leave Joe in fear of what he would do to her. After Joe dies, Janie celebrates in her new found independence and enjoys in while it lasts, which isn't long because she soon meets a man named Teacake. Janie falls in love with Teacake almost instantly and nine years later they marry. After they marry they move to the Everglades where a hurricane hits and causes a rabid dog to bite Teacake. The bite from the rabid dog makes Teacake extremely ill and causes a huge change in his behavior. From the behavior change, Teacake becamed angered and began to shoot at Janie; using self deffense, Janie shoots and kills Teacake. After the tragic death of her one true love, Janie focuses all her attention on her happiness for the rest of her days.
